The study attempts to understand the spatial structure of the houses and settlements of Ahmedabad India. During the rapid changes of history, the spaces of the city accumulated historical accident and images, creating unique shape of city and housing. From such background, the study was undertaken with following purposes. First, to understand the background of formation and the planning principles of Ahmedabad. Second, within the entire urban system of Ahmedabad, to investigate the spatial structure of the settlements. Third, to study the structural characteristics of the house in urban context with its origins. Fourth, to see how the houses existed and how they were collected in the settlement. The houses and settlements of Ahmedabad are composed of the spatial ambiguity where many religions, functions and the times are mixed. Behind the spatial and time complex situation, however, a series of typical system exists and Ahmedabad is a physically implemented reality of the Indian spirit - ‘comprehending multiplicity through the universal order’. |
