Abstract |
This study explores the question of why architects, not landscape architects, have played leading roles that opened a new paradigm of large-scale urban park design which is exemplified by the development of La Villette Park and Downsview after the Central Park of Omlstead. To answer this question, this study investigates the axis of changing paradigm in large-scale urban park design and analyzes two chosen design proposals for La Villette Park of the selected finalists -Rem Koolhass and Bernard Tschumi- and their ideas and theories to figure out how they put together their ideas and concepts for the design. This study obtained two answers as a result of analysis. First answer is the matter of scale. Design competition organizers required an urbanism approaches and various architectural programs because it is an urban scale site. Second answer is multi-layered design process of architects. Architectural thought of two architects, which came from broad thought and theoretical proposals, materialized in their design proposals for La Villette Park. Due to these two factors, architects can lead a new paradigm of large-scale urban park designs since Central Park of Olmstead. |
