Abstract Owing to increases in income and leisure time, the need for better living environments equipped with higher quality of educational and community facilities has sharply increased. This research is an effort to cope with such demands of citizens by suggesting a design proposal for a mixed-use elementary school as the core place in a neighborhood. An elementary school, despite its potential to be an active core of neighborhood life, has been exclusively used only for educational purposes, and it has been isolated from community affairs of its neighborhood. This research suggests a way of organizing spaces provided by several community facilities linked with elementary school to operate continually changing, various programs required by the community. The site in question is in Byulnae New Town being built as a large-scale public rental housing estate.
