Abstract In the late 70s, with the initiation of environment movement in Germany, which adopted the environmentally friendly concept for the housing developments, more than 170 ecological housing estates were developed. Rather than ‘environmentally friendly’ or ‘ecological’ terms, ‘ecologically sustainable’ or ‘sustainable housing development’ has been more widely used to describe the ecological housing estates in Germany since the late 90s. This paper attempts to make a conceptual understanding on the German ecological housing estates, and explores the theoretical background by the comparison of two issues: ‘ecological’ and ‘sustainable’. Before moving on to sustainability assessments of the case studies in terms of spatiall, environmental, economical, and social qualities, the article analyzes the characteristics of the German ecological housing estate design according to their development stages. For the sustainability assessments of seven case studies, which represents each development stages, the comprehensive analyses of the planning strategies were made along with the research on the actual conditions.
