| Abstract |
This study prescribes urban growth management, smart growth and New Urbanism emerged in the US to “the new type of urban development and management” and reviews problems and limitations of the new approach from the comprehensive point of view. Following are the conclusions reported by the empirical studies in the US. The new approach has increased housing prices while it does not have sufficient demand in the market. Unlike its slogan, high-density and self-contained development has not been achieved. The effect of TOD is uncertain but the cost of it is so enormous as to be unmanageable. Not surprisingly, the effect reducing air pollution is inconsequential either. This study surveys 600 people living in the Seoul Metropolitan Area to identify the above arguments raised in the US. The survey result shows that the respondents had negative opinions about mixed-use and highdensity development while having high preference about walkable and public spaces. |
