Abstract |
The objective of this study is to discuss an inquiry of whether or not block type housing has the characteristics of fundamental residential space in which its individuality and aggregateness are respected as the same value for a compositional element in urban space. To do so, the study investigates how the physical status of the block type housing implemented these characteristics via through case studies on the European residential blocks built during the 1920s and 1980s. In addition, it tries to verify the validity of the existence of this block type housing in the recent urban space. The study identifies the block type housing, which is an object of succession, has the characteristics of the composition elements in urban space, mediums between urban areas and architectures, and forming units of communities. Such observation is based on the idea in which blocks are autonomic elements with the nature of repetition and isolation over a range of time periods. |
