Abstract |
The traditional markets in Korea, equipped with old facilities and small individual stores, have been losing their competitiveness over modernized big supermarkets. This phenomenon is also causing the decline of local economy. To restore the function of traditional markets, national government initiates the market renewal projects. However, these projects do not function properly in activating the traditional markets because of a development approach that local characters are not considered. Given this problem, this research studies the problem of the market renewal projects in Korea and suggests based on the Japanese cases that market renewal projects should be along with urban regeneration projects for promoting the local economy. |
