| Abstract |
The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the design guidelines for the case of the new district of Massena in Paris. The experimental urban form of this district was realized by reorganizing the urban spatial structure within the boundary of the ZAC (Zone d'amenagement concerte : Urban Development Zone). The study is carried out by applying a comparative review of the phases and themes of the urban design documents, which indicates the physical development process, design control method and process of establishing urban identity in Massena. Covering the strategies for urban landscape and regulation of architectural forms, the design control plan of the case consists of the following documents:‘PAZ (Plan d'amenagement de zone: Zone Development Plan)’, ‘design guidelines on the district’ and ‘detailed design guidelines on urban blocks in the district’. These design guidelines in particular gradually become more substantial in the process of urban development planning. The study derives three implications for desirable design environment: 1) continuous conciliation process for rational relationships between development subjects, 2) effective establishment of a systematic planning control method, 3) hierarchical approach for design guidelines. |
