| Abstract |
This study focuses on the Shikumen Linong Houses in Taipingqiao district redevelopment project, which covers Xintiandi, one of Shanghai’s old downtowns. This study can offer the fundamental data for finding a direction for preserving the circumstances of cultural history. Firstly, Xintiandi project created new characteristic culture harmonizing old and new by reconstruction boundary of Shikumenlinong residence architecture. Secondly, through the new approach combining preservation with development, this project created a new economical value. Thirdly, the project of Taipingqiao District Redevelopment aimed for establishment of the economic foothold of the old downtown, improvement of physical circumstances, restoration of the city identification, and procuration of the city-resident population. Private organizations led the restoration program of the old downtown for these goals, and set the aspect of international city requesting the master plan for development of the city. Fourthly, the project of Taipingqiao District Redevelopment, as a plan of urban regeneration, attached great importance the historical context and keep up durability through organical and rational approaches. |
