Abstract This article studies on the complicated relation of two different basic ideas, confucianism and buddhism which had very important role in the transfer and decision of the capital city in the beginning of Jo-sun dynasty. The first king of Josun, Yi Sung-Gye suggested the transfer of the capital and was accompanied by great buddhist leader Muak·Jacho as king’s teacher to make a tour around proposed sites for the capital city, Gyeryongsan and Namkyung as soon as he acceded to the throne. The buddhist leader commented on the various sites in terms of realization of buddhist idea to estimate Namkyung as suitable site for the capital. But some confucian retainers opposed to transferring the capital or asked for suspending the decision of transferring the capital, other confucian retainers proposed other sites for the capital. As king expressed his strong will of transferring the capital to Namkyung repeatedly and buddhist in authority came into line with the king in transferring the capital, confucian retainers agreed with king’s idea in order to hold their positions in power system. So Namkyung came to get new name ‘Hanyang’ as the capital city of Jo-sun dynasty.
