Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to understand the spatial structure of the houses and residential areas of Suzhou, China. Suzhou of Ming·Qing Dynasty was so prosperous to make an abundant urban environment. This study was undertaken with following purposes. First, to understand the background of formation and the planning principles of Suzhou. Second, to investigate the spatial structure of urban space. Third, to study the spatial characteristics of residential areas and the grouping mechanisms of houses. Fourth, to classify houses into several types and to see how they existed in urban context. The research findings interpreted through records, old maps, and the scroll painting are summarized as follows: 1) Suzhou accommodated higher spatial variation within symbolic urban structure. 2) Spatial structure of Suzhou was results of intricate canal system. 3) The spaces of residential areas and houses had hierarchical, axial but variational structure. 4) The unit of houses constituted microcosm based on the spatial principal of ‘enclosure’. |
