Abstract This study explores the issues of transformation of urban blocks using an in-depth case study of Ensanche of Barcelona, Spain. It investigates the assemblage pattern and evolutionary dynamics of the urban blocks that associate the physical modification to the early development. The ‘public block’ for public use indicating a matrix of block combinations responding to the function and proximity to urban transportation, maintains its physical configuration and functional integrity. The ‘residential block’ particularly in Dreta Ensanche, however, indicates the process of functional and morphological evolutions featuring the adaptation of residence to commercial and public uses with increased building bulkage and height, diversification of building tenants and floor programs, and direct public access to internal blockyard. The findings suggest that while the public block, depending on its locational orientation, influencing the quality of civic identity and functional performance at both local and urban scale, the residential block, due to its evolutionary nature, critically contributes to the successive adaptation for future uses with integrated design approach of building, blockyard and street.
