Abstract |
This paper aims to figure out causes of the urban form of a residential-commercial complex through analyzing social relations of the urban design process integrated within a development process of the complex. It takes an institutionalist approach for analyzing the process as an social process. It investigates key agencies involved in the urban design decision making process. It identifies individual key agencies’ roles in the development process and their power relations. Then it analyzes their interests manifested in the physical urban form of the complex. Finally it attempts to explain causes of the urban form of the complex on the basis of the social relations of the urban design. As the result of analysis of a case study complex in City of Daegu, it identifies five key agencies and discloses that commercial interests of a real estate developer and a construction firm are manifested in the physical urban form. It also reveals that social and economic interests of the government play an important role in shaping the urban form. |
