Abstract |
This study aims to classify types and characteristics of historical urban form changes in the city center of Seoul since 1912. This study establishes a typological framework, measuring the changes degrees of changes in the historical urban forms. The typological framework consists of the measurement standards on the degrees of changes (organic/heterogeneous and gradual/radical) with three elements (streets, lots and buildings) and their integrated typological matrix (the major 8 type and the sub 64 types). Based on this typological framework, the degrees of urban form changes were measured by using GIS. As results, the prevailing types were 4 major ones. Type M1 retains almost unchanged streets, lots and buildings; Type M2 has changed buildings; Type M4 has changed lots and buildings; and Type M8 changed all three elements. The 4 Types are articulated to have 15 sub types. While the historical urban forms remained in small, dense and irregular forms collectively within blocks, the heterogeneous changes occurred by large merges of lots, widen or constructed roads, and redevelopments. With these changes, historical urban complexities of streets, lots and buildings were transformed into wide roads and huge buildings, which resulted in centered urban formation. These identified types and their characteristics can be used as a basis for revitalization and planning management. |
