Abstract This study examines the form and function of Intermediate Space that guides the pedestrian flow in a large mixed-use complex. It conducted in-depth case studies of New York Rockefeller Center and Boston Prudential Center along with site visits and cartographic observations. The findings are summarized: (1) Armature (extended pedestrian framework on street level) subdivides the site for programmatic layout of public and private uses; (2) Podium (multi-floor platform anchored by vertical circulation systems) mobilizes effective indoor vertical pedestrian flow while contributing to outdoor pedestrian activities in the street environment; (3) Milieu (public space template on Armature and Podium) coordinates the site-wide integrity of pedestrian concentration and spread-out while giving a structural hierarchy to public realm on the site. The study suggests the designing of Intermediate Space based on the three design elements effectively help set alternative design strategies for site planning for a large mixed-use complex.
