Abstract |
This study investigates how the creation of the urban fabric of the Jongno Street block was affected by Sijeon(市廛)-Haengrang(궋걉) building and what are the characteristics of the urban fabric. The study focuses on the building process of Haengrang(궋걉) and the estimation of its unit-size. The block size was about 40~130m(east-west)×11.8m(south-north) and one module(Gan(間)) was 4.0m or 3.2m wide. Based on these analysis, the study finds out that the road width of Jongno in 1912 had widened compared to Joseon Dynasty, but the block form remained unchanged as same as in the late Joseon Dynasty. As a result of the analysis the paper discusses the characteristics of urban fabric of the Jongno Street block as following; the road system shows the front-side public entrance and the back-side private service access, the rectangular shape of the block is formed, the plots are arranged in a single row in the block and mostly wide narrow plot(橫長方型), the commercial buildings form continuing front side building line. In this respect the urban fabric of the Jongno Street block represents a kind of traditional planning concept of the commercial districts in Korea. This should be recognized as one of the key elements of the historic city Seoul. |
