Abstract This study articulates the design concepts and strategies of the winning entry of the International Design Competition for Gwanggyo Lakeside Park. The design can be approached from many aspects: linkage to the city, connection of two lakes, description of traditional Korean Landscape, and the like. A reservoir was a remnant of Korean lives where agriculture was the base of all activities and now it became a center of a city by urban expansion. In this reality, the author focused more on the issue of how to deal with the change of an agricultural reservoir into an urban reservoir. Working spaces and playing spaces were not separated in traditional Korean lives. A reservoir was not only an irrigation facility for production, but also a device to protect a town from floods. Grooves on levee were a resting place and a community center in present version. An urban levee was proposed as a pathway to the city and as a place to express urban dynamics. “Dumbung” is a Korean dialect which means a small natural pool which never dries. It is a biotope where many living organisms interact and children come to play. Six “dumbungs” were proposed. They are extraordinary places which reflect their own indigenous character. They are the places which accommodate everyday lives and leisure of Gywanggyo New City.
