Abstract The urban regeneration does not mean the regeneration through complete redevelopment, but the regeneration for re-creation of the region reflecting the community life in the past and the unique regional identity in deed. In this sense, the urban regeneration of the deteriorated residential area is required to secure the space to support on-going community life and relevant activities as well as reflect the regional, social and economic characteristics of the residents. The case of this study is a deteriorated area of YangLim-dong, Gwangju metropolitan city that has a lot of historic heritage of modern times in this area, but it needs to be rehabilitated since the overall residential area becomes deteriorated. The objectives of this study is to find issues of how to supply the space required for community activities of the residents as well as community mixed-support spaces specific to this area and finding out the corresponding action plans. It°Øs clearly recognized that the public and residents should take lead in stimulating supply of the community mixed-support spaces and securing proactive collaborations with NGOs based on the region.
