Title A Study on the Planning of Daejeon Station as a Pedestrian Plaza

Abstract This study was started with the recognition that a station plaza is considered as urban resources, accepting functional and symbolic events. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to propose proper guidelines to make Daejeon station plaza as a specialized plaza, while consulting an existing station area redevelopment plan. While utilizing a survey research method, this study documented the perceived meanings and characteristics of the Daejeon station plaza. The documentation, recorded and analyzed, was translated as design elements for the plaza plan. Finally, this study suggested the following design guidelines for Daejeon station plaza developing specialized plaza, showing a sense of place. This paper categorized the proper role of Daejeon station plaza into followings: (1) symbolic plaza; (2) cultural plaza; (3) pedestrian plaza; and (4) environment-friendly plaza. Each category takes form in this planning elements: media floor and information tower for symbolic plaza, grandstand and open stage for cultural plaza, colonnade and wood deck floor for pedestrian plaza, water jet and beacon for environment-friendly plaza.
