Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of water space in the spatial hierarchy of Oeam Folk Village. The spatial structure consists of green space, water space, streets, and houses which are clustered around the well. The village streets, mainly T-type, are organically connected with streams in the spatial structure. The water space system of Oeam Village is composed of a natural stream, an artificial stream and the wells for private or public use. The characteristics of waters space can be summarized as territory, safety, amenity, and landscape. The meaning of these characteristics in the contemporary urban design is that water space can be a strong framework of the spatial structure, and can provide a good sense of territory as an edge. It is also an organic connection with pedestrian streets, a natural drainage system, and a multi-purpose symbolized place for the community, providing visual openness, continuity, and human scale streetscape. Nowadays the water space became an important public place for both of the residents and visitors of the historic folk village.
