Abstract |
This study was intended to seek the sustainability of spontaneous settlements' urban fabric, considering the bad residential environment of spontaneous settlements in Korean cities, and the problems followed by redevelopment with complete demolition of the settlements. The analysis of history, current situation, urban fabric and residential environment revealed that Haebangchon(Yongsangu, Seoul) has been developed from a shantytown to a typical urban residential area. Haebangchon has a number of physical elements which can make the community sustainable, including topography, urban fabric in human scale, low-rise highdensity, the mixed used street, important historical facilities, etc. Should living environment of Haebangchon be developed respecting the historic and sustainable physical elements, it would possibly be a historic site showing Korea's modern living culture as well as an attractive residential area where people can feel the nature in the middle of the town. |
