Abstract |
Recently there have been many cases of Mixed-use complex (MXC) planning with the purpose of urban regeneration. This study is about the place identity of open space in the MXC, while the goal of the research is to define the significance of place. The study analyzes the characteristics of open space and defines the place signification of open space through three cases, planed as MXC in Tokyo. The analysis framework is drawn from correlation among three factors of space composition, physical environment, and human’ activity, this framework can draw each place signification of three cases. The conclusion is as follows. First, the open space of the MXC in Tokyo has a new space identity that differs from the European traditional open space identity. Second, the open space of the MXC in Tokyo is planned as an embraced space which suggests the open space facilitates not only necessary activities but also optional activities and social activities. Finally, the open space has a new signification. This new sense of place means people appreciate site as place not space. |
