Abstract |
Can mobility-handicapped people access the streets and shops without having to deal with any inconveniences in Insa-dong in Seoul? This research leads to this question to evaluate the accessibility for the disabled, especially the wheelchair users on the streets of Insa-Dong. The purpose is to discover problems and to enhance the guidelines of Insa-Dong District Plan for the disabled. Entrances and exits of 118 shops along the major streets of Insa-Dong were analyzed. The width and the way of opening of the door, the elevation of the entrance door from the ground level, and the existence of special wheelchair access ramp were taken into consideration. The observation indicates that 37 out of 118 shops follow the guidelines for the elevation of the entrance door. Only 9 shops abide by guidelines for making access ramp. Even those shops that follow the guidelines have problems due to narrow entrance and the way doors open and close. Based on the analysis, detailed methods to improve the accessibility for the disabled, such as the improvement of access ramp guidelines and the introduction of entrance door guidelines, were proposed. |
