Abstract Population concentration by urbanization leads to various urban problems such as traffic congestions. City of Seoul recognized that bus transportation could not be enough to handle urban problems so that it opened its first subway line in 1974. Since then, subway becomes one of major public transportations to share more ridership than others in earnest. Nevertheless there have been occurred unexpected problems like unbalance between the auto-centric urban space and the newly designated station area, and land-use contradiction. Without considerable considerations of expected problems, a new subway line is scheduled to construct. Recently, Kangnam-gu's 4 subways which are scheduled to open in Metro line 9 have the highest development pressures. That line could be another trigger to produce other problems. To overcome such problems, this study drew the reserved land’s classifying and characters by analyzing land-use and pedestrian environment. Furthermore, it proposes the alternative plan to crack the problems from the formation of auto-centric station area and make the desirable living area around the station based on the properties from the study. The recommendations can be used as the database after its completion and contribute to create the advisable station area.
