Abstract |
This study aims to find out the change of urban heat island's characteristics due to climate change in Seoul, Korea. First, we study the change of Seoul's weather, and we find out the urban heat island in cloudy days occurs more often day by day. This is a very unique characteristic of Korean weather, because normal urban heat island mostly appears in sunny days. This unique characteristic is because South Korea is under effects of North Pacific air masses in summer, which are very hot and humid. So the urban heat island in cloudy days could be shown often in South Korea. Second, we analyze the difference of factors that could affect the urban heat island in sunny days and cloudy days. As for data, we used 31 points' AWS (Auto Weather Station) data of the Korea Meteorological Administration in Seoul. The results show that the urban heat island in sunny days would be affected by the altitude, the mean velocity of wind, and the area ratio of greens, which are similar to those in the existing researches. In the case of the urban heat island in cloudy days, the altitude, the aspect ratio, and the mean velocity of wind are crucial. This implies that to reduce urban heat island, the wind path is important in the urban planning. Also, the greening of parking lots, building walls, and building roofs would be effective. |
