Abstract |
This paper aims to examine the form-based codes (FBCs), a new regulatory tool for urban design, focusing on the Beerline B Project in Milwaukee, which involves form-based codes. The results of the analyses show that FBCs has key characteristics as follows: First, FBCs addresses the relationship between buildings and urban space. Second, the regulations and standards in FBCs are provided in diagrams and words. So, it is easy to understand the regulations, and it makes people predict the appropriate forms and scales of the proposed developments. Meanwhile, the characteristics of the Beerline B project, involving form-based codes, imply that FBCs’ neighborhood codes of the project is consistent with its master plan. It also includes both urban codes and architectural codes, which consider the relationships between buildings and urban space. Consequently, it is a worth investigation, which recognizes a new regulatory tool for improving the quality of urban spaces in development projects or urban regeneration projects in Korea. |
