Abstract This study proposes improvement schemes to manage, preserve or redevelop the low-rise residential areas in Korea, which have been previously dominated by massive redevelopment projects aiming for apartment housings. Based on the findings, this study argues that the areas need to vitalize community, since it has social, cultural, and economic advantages in urban context. In addition, as the areas have several physical problems - e.g., lack of linfrastructures, ventilation, and lighting - this study suggests to maintain the infrastructure for improving the environmental quality of the areas. Ultimately, this study proposes the following schemes: First, the area needs a management tool to preserve the characteristics which provides various housing types and urban landscapes, reflecting the city. Second, infrastructure, as well as physical environment, should be improved. Third, the convenience and safety of the areas should be secured by the installment of CCTVs, night guards sponsored by residents, and community facilities. Fourth, to encourage the resident participation in managing the areas, this study proposes to establish a management body that is operated by residents and supported by new covenants.
