| Abstract |
The purposes of this study are to analyze the citizens utilization of urban forest and their awareness of forest effect on urban heat island (UHI) reduction. It also seeks to raise the citizen participation and the efficacy of urban forests in the environmental policy of Chungju City, which is under the rapid urbanization process. We distributed questionnaires to the 13 Eup-Myun and 12 Dong in Chungju City and 520 questionnaires of them were collected in September, 2010. As a result, the survey found that citizens used forests chiefly for the purpose of rest and within one hour in the afternoon of holidays regardless of season. Their activities were focused on stroll and mountain climbing accompanied by family members or friends. They referred to ‘natural topography and landscape’ as satisfactory factors, which requires the continuous management of urban forests. Most of respondents them were aware of the urban heat island phenomenon. The more aware they were of urban forests, the more interested citizens were in the UHI phenomenon; and they gave an affirmative answer to the participation in urban forest establishment projects. In addition, the analysis shows that the nearer they lived to forests, the more comfortable and cooler residents felt, especially night rather than in the daytime. |
