Abstract |
This paper aims to analyze the perception of proximity to and the utilization of essential community services by older individuals living in urban areas. The differences in the utilization patterns by socio-demographic groups and physical environmental factors correlated with those differences are also presented. The analysis suggested that the most critical community destination was the park/open space, of which distance perception was relatively great despite the high frequency of use. Recreational, medical, and religious services were required closer to home; thus, a more convenient mode of access to the destination should be provided for older people who live outside of walking distance. The uses of neighborhood facilities were correlated with the level of satisfaction of physical/environmental factors such as separate sidewalks, benches, and traffics. The convenience of a safe and pleasant walking environment connecting to neighborhood services and facilities is expected to encourage the uses of such facilities and promote the daily walking of urban senior citizens. |
