Abstract |
The place attachment or the fond feeling towards home, is defined as an affective bond or link between people and specific places. Through place attachment to a site, we can not only gain psychological stability, but also a sense of belonging to neighborhoods. We tend to develop place attachment to temporary residences such as dormitories and rented rooms, however. This study aims to find the reason for the difference by extracting the factors that influence the affective bond and comparing the place attachment to temporary residences with that to long-term residential houses. The results of the research are as follows. First, the levels of the place attachment to temporary residential places were weaker than those to hometowns. The degrees of the place attachment to dormitories were not different from those to rented rooms. Second, the result of a multiple regression analysis for the place attachment to temporary residences showed that the components related to the quality of the housing, except for air-conditioning system, had a larger effect than other factors. The variables related to time and social relationship were not significant in the model, which means that the place attachment to temporary residences was particularly affected by the physical characteristics of housing. Third, unlike the earlier research conducted overseas, the place attachments to temporary dwellings and permanent houses did not clash with each other, but formed a complementary relationship. |
