Abstract |
This study aims to analyze generation’s perception differences on historic cultural landscape in downtown Seoul. Through surveys and statistical analysis, this study finds that historic cultural landscapes could contribute to forming collective memory among diverse generations. Downtown in Seoul is selected as a study area due to the representation of Seoul’s identity. People in 20s and 60s were surveyed. Findings resulting from analysis are summarized as follows: First, a common recognition of the representative place is formed due to experiential memory. While experiential memory influences the recognition of representative places, recognition of different representative places is constructed between those in 20s and 60s who visited different places. Second, recognition of place of identical value is formed by reason of cultural memory. Although 20s and 60s has different experiential memories of visiting places, 20s also recollect a historic cultural landscape about place value owing to artificial cultural memory. Since cultural memories influence the recognition of place value, there is a small gap between generations. Third, historic cultural landscapes contribute to collective memories that work as a means to integrate 20s and 60s. Memories can be shared with 20s who lack experiential memories by helping them construct cultural memories. Therefore, we conclude that it is very crucial to conserving historical environments along with measures which contribute to creating collective memories. |
