Abstract |
This study examines the influence of Information and Telecommunication on the growth form of Seoul in recent years. It comparatively analyzes geographic characteristics of the commuter paths and activity nodes (of Retail Shopping, Culture Education, and Social Gathering) of the two comparable IT users (age groups of 18-30 and of 30-50 respectively). The analyses indicate (1) extension of commuter path along subway line, (2) spatial orientation of activity nodes towards workplace/university and transfer hub over home, (3) centrifugal tendency of activity nodes from the commuter path. Such spatial dynamics are significantly determined by the activities of Culture Education and Social Gathering of the higher IT users. The results conclude the activity sphere is increasingly extended by workplace/university-based social network in a metropolitan setting, rather than home-based pedestrian neighborhood. Furthermore, their geographic orientation is driven by higher IT user of the youth whose locational freedom is paradoxically limited by available ridership of public transit. The findings imply the location of university/workplace with subway/transit system becomes an effective guiding framework for shaping the structure and direction of future metropolitan growth. |
