Abstract |
The number of foreigners living in Korea has increased in recent years and started to form ethnic enclaves in the Seoul metropolitan area. This study aims to conduct an empirical analysis to find out the place perceptions and space using patterns of the Chinese immigrants in their ethnic enclaves, including the Korean Chinese and other Chinese ethnic groups. By surveying the two groups in the case area, Wongok-dong, Ansan, known as a dominant ethnic enclave in Korea, this study could draw the three results as follows; First, the Korean Chinese and other Chinese ethnic groups in comparison with the Koreans show similar space using patterns and place perceptions in the area. The two groups are distinguished from the Koreans in all variables of this research. Second, the Chinese immigrants use the most of the spatial resources in the enclave and dominate the area. They heal homesickness by visiting the area with positive images. Third, the physical facilities as well as communication and activity variables influence the place image of the Chinese immigrants in the community. The two later variables have strong relationship with the area image and facilities' uses. The place perceptions and space using patterns of the immigrants in an ethnic enclave should be considered as a basis for better accommodating a desirable multi-cultural society. |
