Abstract The purpose of this paper was to explore how to plan waterfront multi-family housing that enlivens the placeness and utilizes the advantage of downtown waterfront, potentially valued for expanding urban infrastructure and supplying lands. Analyzing the case of London Docklands that succeeded in making up housing and public space with waterfront development, the study suggested the following ways to design waterfront multi-family housing: (1)to design waterfront plazas, decks, esplanades and green parks along such natural and artificial water spaces as riverfront, canal, dock and artificial lake and to form a variety of networks among these so as to make up a nature-friendly waterfront landscape; (2)to place such culture and leisure programs as community center, museum, marina together with the waterfront and green spaces; (3)to limit the automobile access to the waterfront and the inside of the complex, ensuring accessibility to the waterfront by systematic connection of pedestrian circulation; (4)to plan the waterfront plazas and esplanades open to the public but resident-oriented; (5)to place various types of waterfront multi-family housing, such as terrace house, townhouse, and mixed-use building, linked to the open space for the complex; (6)to make up the unique landscapes of each complexes and maximize their lookouts considering place and topography.
