Abstract |
Overseas urban development during the Industrial Age has not been treated as main research topic due to its negative influence of colonial development and sensitiveness of colonialism. However, it is important case from various aspects since global interest in overseas urban development has been steadily increased recently. Thus, this study analyzed the organization, roles and activities of the East India Company of England and the South Manchuria Railways Corporation of Japan as the case study to understand overseas urban development during the industrial age. Main bodies of the companies consist of both public and private sectors. They had established cities not only through their construction service but also through their businesses activities such as the spice trade, railway enterprise and etc., which played a role for policy?making by their special intelligence group such as confidential committee and investigation department. The urban development by these two sectors (public?private) had been executed through their long term plan. The urban infrastructure constructed during this time of period has influenced over many areas locally including local economy, lifestyle and etc. even until present time. From industrial point of view, their activities of overseas urban development show it is rather comprehensive business performance rather than physical construction activity only. This has important implication for establishing new concept of overseas urban development for those who had narrow view on overseas urban development as overseas construction business only. |
