Abstract |
This study explores the concept and historical context of Sustainable Landscape, and methods, performances and benefits of Sustainable Urban Landscape Design by analyzing five cases, of thirty sustainable landscape designs that ASLA(American Society of Landscape Architects) suggested. First of all, Sustainable Urban Landscape Design is defined as landscape providing environmental, social, and economic benefits through eco-friendly landscape spaces and facilities, and landscape design methods. Second, Sustainable Urban Landscape Design is realized by using various landscape spaces and facilities, and applying integrated landscape design methods such as ecological water management techniques, stormwater harvesting systems, wastewater treatment systems, drip irrigation systems, green roofs, roof farms, bioswales, wetlands, bio-ponds, rain gardens, landscaped curb extensions, permeable pavements, cisterns, rain barrels, natural illumination, natural ventilation, recycled materials, and native plant restoration. Third, Sustainable Urban Landscape Design provides various sustainable environmental, social, and economic benefits such as sound water circulation, microclimate control, increase in biodiversity, energy and resource saving, and increase in social interaction as well as mitigation of and adaption to climate change by reducing carbon dioxide and minimizing negative impacts of heavy rain, heat waves, and droughts. |
