Abstract |
The study aims to analyze the essential changes of urban fabric during the Japanese Ruling Period in Korea. It is to compare between physical urban fabric based on historical data and the quantitative analysis with Space Syntax method. For this purpose, developing patterns of before and after the Japanese occupation with time-periodic maps are carried out in Seoul. According to the study, even though the Japanese government was trying to erase the traditional urban structure and its historical values completely by distorting the existing road patterns, it has not been carried out successfully in terms of the essential urban fabric of Seoul. From this study, a basic structure of essential urban fabric should be a fundamental principle in urban planning and that is not political-tools to achieve high effect in short time. The essential part of the actual urban change does not rely on the external appearance of the building, but on genuine spatial structure. It also implies that it is critical to examine the existing spatial structure when planning and designing new redevelopment plans. |
