Abstract The goal of this study is to offer guidelines for common use space that provides a 'Creative Research Environment' in the Institute for Basic Science(IBS) in Daejeon, Korea. The criteria for common use space that is highly efficient and creative in research environment are as follows: it attracts leading scientists, functions as a place for meeting and communicating information between disciplines, and allows creative research methods through the gathering of many cultures. This study offers 4 new approaches in designing common use space. First, common use space should consider its expansion according to the scale of site from architectural plan to site plan. Second, community programs should be designed in the consideration of their goal, number of users, and common use space. Third, the ground floor area of buildings should be connected to both the community program and common use space. Lastly, all common use spaces and community programs in the site should be connected to the Community Corridor to allow communication throughout the entire site. By applying the new possibilities in designing common use space for a creative environment to the IBS, this study also provides a model for creative research environment.
