Abstract |
This study examines the issue of shifting urban form, specifically how a city with grid system changes into one with radial block structure. It investigates the characteristics and process of morphological transformation of Cordoba, Spain, via comparative interpretation and cartographic observation of location, layout, structure and programs. The results reveal that Cordoba?s change be understood as an example of intended consequence of development interventions by decision-makers from Roman Castrum (Colonia Patricia) to Islam Media (Qurtuba Islamica), and subsequently into Catholic Villa (Cordoba Cristiana). Throughout its path, the Islamic intervention appears to give an ever-lasting shape to the existing city form. Such interventions were particularly featured in the city center as well as expansion nodes of the Islamic programs to be replaced with the Catholic substitutes. (Al-jama Mosque to Mezquita Cathedral, mosques to Iglesias Fernandinas, souks to Plaza Mayor, convento and hospital, etc.) Such findings suggest a meaningful alternative way to understand not only the European cities, but also the major Asian and Korean cities which experienced such drastic changes during their Colonial period and contemporary expansion. |
