Abstract Increasing attention have given to recycling energy, public transportation, bicycle and walking due to the high fuel price and climate change. For example, the ministry of land, transport and maritime affairs revised the stnadard of the minimum valid sidewalk width from 1.5m to 2.0m for promoting pedestrian's comfortable walking environment. However, this width neither have criteria to assess the proper sidewalk width, nor consider the characteristic of lane use, which directly affects the pedestrian volume. This study focuses on how to determine the width of sidewalk considering land use characteristic. Based on 120 development districts of residential sites, this study suggested sidewalk width planning criteria using pedestrian density.
