Abstract |
As there are increasing interests in participatory urban planning, citizens look for more active and advanced ways of involvement in urban planning process rather than for passive ones. Among various participatory planning techniques, there are increasing interests in using urban design games as a useful participatory planning tool for encouraging public participation in urban planning processes and supporting citizen's decision-making processes. Considering these recent trends in participatory urban planning, the purpose of this study is to identify historic underpinning and theoretical background of urban design games and suggest future challenges of participatory urban planning techniques through wide range of research literature review. To achieve these goals, this study also conducts case studies of the Human Town Development Project in Seoul which uses an urban design game in the urban redevelopment process and urban design games of US and UK which widely use urban design game in various forms. Finally, by providing general understandings of urban design games as a tool for encouraging public involvement, regardless of age, income, and social status in the easiest way, this study provides several implications and meanings in urban planning and design context in Korea. |
