Abstract This study empirically assesses the moderation effects of neighborhood-level physical environment, individual socioeconomic characteristics and housing types on walking activity, using multi-level regression modeling. Using individual's on-average walking time per day as the dependent variable, we employ explanatory variables such as density, diversity, design, and accessibility for neighborhood physical environment based on the residential addresses of survey respondents. Our results confirmed mediation effects between neighborhood-level physical environment and individual socioeconomic features that influence individual walking activity. In particular, transit accessibility in residential areas has a mediation effect with individual car ownership in explaining individual walking activity. This result demonstrates that the association between neighborhood environment and personal walking activity can be better understood if the interaction effects between neighborhood environment and individual factors are considered.
