Abstract |
This study examines the effectiveness and adaptability of LEED rating systems, when they are applied to large-scale, high-density developments. Toward this goal, the elements of LEED-NC and LEED-ND are systematically compared to those of the Battery Park City Development (BPCD) guidelines, which consist of a series of guidelines for high-rise residential building developments located in New York City. The comparative analysis of 97 elements in the LEED rating systems and BPCD guidelines identifies both common and different elements of the two design standards. The difference in the elements may be caused by BPCD's high-density development, site characteristics, different sustainable technologies, and most of all, perspectives towards sustainability. Analysis of the elements revealed that the LEED rating systems need to consider the incorporation of some crucial sustainability elements for high-density developments; and some elements that are included in the building design phase need to be considered earlier, in the urban planning & design phase. |
