Abstract Due to continuous establishment of new facilities, objective analysis of the locational characteristics of incineration plants based on regional conditions is needed. However, most studies in this domain have not actively dealt with this issue. In this context, the goal of this study is to explain trends in incineration plant location using a statistical approach implemented with geographic data. This study first analyzed the locational density of incinerators using Hot-spot analysis. The results show that metropolitan areas and Jeollanam-do have potential to install new incineration plants. Based on this result, this study conducted statistical analysis using spatial regression to control for potential spatial autocorrelation. The results indicate that the goodness-of-fit of the spatial regression model is superior to the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model. The analytical method employed by this study can be applied to the evaluation of the locational conditions of various facilities. Furthermore, regional studies can provide objective information for establishing waste management policies.
