Abstract The interaction between children and their neighborhood environments is very important in their early childhood development. Children are the foremost user group in apartment complexes, but they are not considered to be stakeholders in planning and managing their own environments. Through a participatory design process with five-year-old kindergarten children, this study tries to find out how children perceive their neighborhood environment and the changes they want to make. There are three major findings in terms of the cognitive changes about their neighborhood, their preferred spaces, and the developmental aspect of participation. Findings from the participatory design process have two implications: a planning and design aspect and a pedagogical aspect. The engagement in a participatory design program can help children empower themselves as significant users and constructors of the environment. The design experiences can also help children recover and reconstruct the meaning of home and neighborhood in their childhood, and provide a platform on which to form individual identities as well as a sense of belonging to a community.
