Abstract |
Focusing on participatory planning techniques, this study aims to provide planners with basic data and implications through identifying the characteristics of various planning participants. Through an analysis of the most used participatory planning techniques, this study identifies the characteristics of various planning participants who serve as implementation or supporting parties in the participatory planning process. The major findings of this study follow. First, in classifying planning participants based on project type, participatory planning projects tend to be carried out by participants who desire to improve the livability of their surroundings, but these projects tend to have limitations in terms of constant financial support and management. Projects implemented by local municipalities have financial and administrative advantages. However, they require additional efforts to encourage people to get involved in the participatory planning process because of a lack of interaction between residents in that area. Participatory planning projects by non-governmental organizations (civic groups) can encourage robust interaction among people because they are generally carried out with various interim planning activities. Planning projects led by planning experts can be conducted in a more systematic way than the other planning projects because residents' needs can be interpreted and dealt with from planning professional perspectives. |
