Abstract |
There were rich store of modern historic buildings in old town of Seoul. But many historic modern buildings were demolished during the colonial period, Korea War, and especially in 1960's when the eoconomic growth was at it peak. Hwa-Shin Department Store standing at the corner of Jonggak crossing was an important historic modern building, which was designed by famous Korean architect Park Kil-Ryong and was the first department store founded by the investment of a Korean entrepreneur in the colonial time. It was worth for preservation for both architectural and historic value. However, the building was included as a part of the urban redevelopment plan in 1978 and finally demolished in 1987. This paper investigates historic and architectural value of the demolished building and analyze the discussion for preserving it. The conclusions of the study are as follows: First, the case provided a valuable opportunity to the society to reconsider the value of preserving historical buildings as a historic asset. Second, the case contributed to introducing historic preservation into the planning law. Third, the preservation of the modern building can be achieved not only through the value recognition by the planning professionals, but the sharing of the historical value of the modern building among the general public. |
