Abstract |
Suicide rate of Korea is the highest in the OECD. The problem results from complex issues such as mental health, poverty and social relationships. It is supposed that these factors of suicide are closely related to spatial characteristics of the residential environment. However, previous studies approach suicide from the social and economic aspects but not from spatial aspects. This study aims to analyze spatial characteristics of the residential environment where suicides lived. We will analyze the relationship between suicide rates and spatial characteristics by housing type. The criteria of analysis is suicide rates, connectivity between the neighbours, securement of urban public space as community facilities, and the spatial hierarchy. The results are as follows : the highest housing type in suicide rate is 'row house'. The next highest housing type is of which are located in non-residential area, and followed by 'detached house', and 'apartment complex'. It is concluded that the higher suicide rates are, the poorer spatial characteristic in terms of connectivity, community facilities, public spaces and accessibility. This study is meaningful in that it is the first research that investigated suicide and spatial characteristics in terms of spatial characteristics of housing. |
