Abstract |
Changshin-dong has long functioned as a behind-the-scenes production area for the Dongdaemun clothing industry and combines living and manufacturing in the urban fabric. This study aims to identify the spatial characteristics of Changshin-dong, in particular its industrial environment. A site survey was conducted to clarify the distribution of clothing manufacturers’ locations and characteristics. The survey helped to analyze their locational and distributional characteristics and to investigate their relationship. The distributional characteristics are the following. First, sewing subcontractors show the widest distribution and were mainly distributed in the higher areas, while an entrance area and the middle portion demonstrated interior block distributions. Second, the main factory revealed high density distributions in the entrance area, Changshin-gil street, and the main street with good accessibility and a clear identity. Third, the ironing firms were distributed along the roadside, where approaches and parking for motorcycles is available. This is because motorcycles not only transport byproducts after initial handling but also deliver finished goods to Dongdaemun market. Fourth, although few in number, the post-processing establishments were distributed alongside the main road at regular intervals. Firm size, meanwhile, was found to be connected to concentrated areas. In the case of large-scale factories, the connection of repeating links and breaks was examined over the entire clothing production area covering Changshin 1,2,3 dong. The relationship is not focused or concentrated in one area. Instead, as a whole, they are connected and involved in the production Changshin-dong clothing factory industry ecosystem. Therefore, we should seek a way to improve overall management of the ecosystem. |
