Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to investigate associations of air pollution with the urban environmental factors, and to provide recommendations for managing urban air pollution. The analysis focuses on the three major air pollutants(NO₂, SO₂, O₃). The findings indicated that the current spatial boundary for measuring air pollution level were too large to reflect the variation of urban spatial pattern which influenced the air pollution. Among the three alternatives of the spatial unit of analysis for measuring air pollution, the smallest one (circular buffer of 500m around the observation point) obtained consistently significant relationships between the air pollution and the urban environmental factors. The smallest spatial unit of analysis for NO₂ and O₃ to show significant associations with urban environmental factors was the circular buffer of 500m around the observation point, while it increased to 1000m for SO₂. Transportation related factors were the main contributors for increase of the pollution level for NO₂, and transportation, land use, natural environmental factors were related to the increase of O₃ and SO₂. |
